The Original Shire
named Henrico County
was established in 1634 in Virginia. Later from the original shire
of Henrico County was established Goochland in 1727, and Chesterfield County
was created from Henrico in 1749. Both Henrico and Chesterfield
Counties holds many of our TOTTY records. According
to the book Hotten's "Original Lists of Persons of Quality", Gen. Pub.
Co., 1968, the TOTTY family may likely have came to
American as early as 6 June 1635, on page
84, it lists Thomas Tollie age 17 on the ship "Thomas and John" being
transported to Virginia. On page 85 there is Thomas Toolie age 30, also
on the "Thomas and John", now as
some of us know the name TOTTY has also been
viewed as being of those spelling varients.
Unless otherwise noted the following records were
extracted and submitted by TOTTY researcher Birdie (Totty) McNutt

Notes: According to this source,
it was not stated where Thomas TOTTY was imported from. BUT importation,
mean the act of bringing something or someone of importance from a foreign
country. This was a practice by the Virginian colonist's in
order to receive land for bringing someone under the "headright system",
even if the person was already previously living in Virginia and was just
coming back from a foreign country visit. Also note that Mary Franklin
likely the wife of James FRANKLIN was imporated at same time that Thomas
TOTTY was. May likely have been travelling together as neighbors.

Notes: Why is George Hunt named as security with
Thomas TOTTY regarding the estate of the Orphans of Thomas Davis? What
tie did George Hunt have with Thomas TOTTY? Could it have something
to do with the widow Mary Davis who married Thomas TOTTY? It
has been thought by many TOTTY researchers, that Mary was nee Carter, daughter
of Giles & Hannah CARTER who was named in his will as being married
to Thomas DAVIS. However some questions as to Mary being a Carter
has been voiced due to her age. ANY help on this puzzel would
be greatly appreciated!

He was 22 years of age when he embarked to come to the Colonies. These
facts are established by HENRICO COUNTY COLONIAL RECORDS, DECEMBER 1, 1691,
Colonial Records Book 5, Page 263. Recorded are
three depositions presented in Court in a law suit of Bridgett Lugrove
vs. Major Thomas Chamberlain for release from Indenture as a servant

Deponent stated that she came in the same

bound for seven years and asked her release. She could not produce
her copy of the Indenture which had been given to said Major Chamberlain.,

others testifying for him., disclaimed any knowledge of such an Indenture.

whom were connected through there father's land and friendship and both
born in the same area. Could the wife of William TOTTY, Sr.
be Mary MA(N)N, daughter of Robert MA(N)N? Robert also had
a son Francis MAN. William TOTTY named a son Francis who named one
of his son's Robert TOTTY my ancestor. Again we see reference to
George Hunt, Robert Mann and Thomas TOTTY. Coincidence? or

1719 December Court
[Henrico Co., Va Minuete Book 1719-1724] December Court 1719 Mary
HASTINGS granted administration of estates of John HASTINGS, dec'd;
Mr William KENNON, Security. George Willson,
William Worsham,
George Archer and Richard Willson to inventory the estate.
Notes: BTM] Tradition is that John Hastings
was married to Mary WORSHAM. How was the above William WORSHAM related
to her? Why was William Kennon the Security, how was he related to her?
Who were her parents. Need marriage record or Will of her parents
to prove her parentage and surname. Their son John HAESTIN/HASTINGS
later had a daughter named Mary who married a TOTTY.
Question - Could the Widow of "1719", Mary WORSHAM HASTINGS, later have
married to William TOTTY, Sr. ca 1720/1721?? bringing to the
marriage step children George, Henry and John? IF so, there
would have been a very close relationship of the her son John to the TOTTY
family of William TOTTY. see also Chesterfield

ca 1720 Marriage
William TOTTY, Sr. to Mary Unknown, research still in
progress
Notes: William is the son of Thomas
TOTTY and Mary, widow of Thomas DAVIS. We are still progress
of identifying the maiden name of William's wife Mary. Some researcher's
claim
that William TOTTY, Sr. born 1693 was married to Mary HAESTIN/HASTINGS
born 1745, however this is NOT possible since she was born long
AFTER the birth of William and Mary's children as documented in the Bristol
Parish Records of Henrico. Mary HASTINGS TOTTY was the daughter
of John and Amy TUCKER HAESTIN-HASTINGS who were married in 1739.
Mary named in her father John HASTINGS will, was likely to have married
William TOTTY, Jr. who was born March 15, 1726/7 However
we are still in the process of documenting which TOTTY she was actually
married to. see above... and Amelia

and his son William TOTTY, however this is still under research.
Any help on this family would be appreciated.
1725 December 1725 Birth
[Bristol Parish Records, Henrico County, VA] The "first"
William TOTTY son of William and Mary TOTTY was born on this
day.
Notes: Bristol Parish records show that
William
and Mary TOTTY had "two" son's born that were named William. One born
Dec 5th 1725 bap May 30, 1726. This William must have
died aft May 30, 1726 and before 1727 when the second son William was born
to William and Mary TOTTY on 15th March 1727 and bap. 3rd June 1727.
This is William TOTTY, "Jr?", son of William TOTTY born ca 1693.
One error in the book "TOTTY & TOTTY TIES", is shown by these records
in Bristol Parish, as Alma Totty Seitz states William Jr was born Dec.
25, 1725 when in fact that "first" William TOTTY was deceased prior to
March 1727.

was married to, what maiden name was, or who her parents were?
Declaration for Pension;
Early in the month of April in the year 1781,
as well as this declarant now recollects, having been regularly drafted,
he entered the service of the United States in the Revolutionary War, in
the Company of militia commanded by Captain Benjamin WARD, belonging to
Colonel Robert GOODE's Regiment, in the County of Chesterfield; marched
directly to Petersburg, and was put
under the command either of General Mehlenberg
or Baron Steuben, and stationed at that place, about the last of April.
The American troops having withdrawn from this station at Petersburg after
the attack made upon them by the British forces, this declarant, with the
company and Regiment before mentioned, marched through the County of Chesterfield
by the Court
House of that County, (which was burnt afterwardsd
by a passing detachment of the British Army) crossed James River at or
near Tuckahoe, marched thence down to Wilton just below Richmond, and was
tehn put under the command of General LAFAYETTE. At this place most
of the Chesterfield militia were discharged; but this declarant, with others,
was detached from Captain WARD's company and attached to the company to
militia commanded by Captain David PATTERSON and to the Regiment commanded
by Colonel H. George TUCKER, and continued in the service until after the
capture of the British
Army at York Town; during this time the company
and the Regiment to which he belonged were marched about a good deal betwen
James and York Rivers without being stationed long at any particular place,
were in the neighborhood of Old James Town at the time of a skirmish then
between the British Troops under CORNWALLIS and the Americans, were afterwards
stationed a while at Williamsburg, where they
were transferred to York Town and attached to the main Army under the command
of General (George) WASHINGTON, which was then inviting the British Army
at that place; where this declarant remained until the surrender of CORNWALLIS,
on the 19th of October 1781, was discharged at that place about a week
after that event, and got home to Chesterfield about the first of November,
having served, he thinks not less than six months and half.
This Declarant entered the service early in the
month of April 1781, being called out at the time of Arnold's second invasion
of this part of Virginia, and continued in the service without intermission
until after CORNWALLIS' surrender at York Town the 19th of October following.
He recollects no Regular Officers or troop units thaose already mentioned,
except that he was well acquainted and served with Captain David MANN at
York Town, who commanded a company of artilery, he thinks, during the seige.
That he received a winter discharge from the Army, but does not now recollect
by whom it was signed and not careful to preserve it, and does not know
whether it is now in existence. That he was born in the County of
Chesterfield in the State of Virginia, the 16th of September 1764, according
to a Register of his age made by his father in an old book, now in his
possession, resided in that county at the time he was called into the service,
and afterward until about ninteen years ago, when he moved ot the city
of Richmond where he has resided ever since, with the exception of two
years of that he resoded about twelve miles from that city in the countyof
Henrico. Having been raised in the county of Chesterfield and called
into service in that County, and having resided there the greater part
of his life, and the proof and reputation of his service being in that
county, he has made his declaration before that Court, instead of in Richmond,
the place of his present resident.
