Introduction
NOTE: Virginia was the 10th
State, being admitted to the Union in
1788. The Virginia Company was granted a charter by James
I in 1606 to colonize Virginia. The first ships left in 1607 and
formed the first permanent English settlement in the New World at Jamestown.
One of the first leaders of the settlement was Captain John Smith.
Many of the colonist lived through very harsh winters and primitive surroundings.
John Rolf cultured the first tobacco in 1612 in the Virginia colony and
later married Pocahontas. The Virginia Company granted free land
in 1618 to all free settlers and allowed a general assembly to be held.
After the Indian massacre in 1622 and disputes in the colony James I revoked
the Virginia Company's charter and made Virginia a royal colony in 1624.
Immigrants arrived nearly every month and by 1700, Virginia had many thousands
of inhabitants. We first find the Thomas TOTTIE name among
the passenger lists in early 1600's. Our Totty Roots
Research Group is in the process of trying to document by the Virginia
records who our earliest TOTTY ancestors were.
Our Goal: Digging for our TOTTY Roots
and finding all the leaves to our TOTTY Tree.
