Introduction
The County of Upshur was created from Harrison and Nacogdoches counties in 1846, and aorganized the same year. The county was named for J. P Upshur, the U.S. Secretary of State. Gilmer is the county seat and this is where our TOTTY and associated families were living for a short time in the late 1800's.
Census of 1860 Upshur County,
Texas
Household #972-931:
G. B. Tillman 39 male Farmer Ala
Adeline 29 female Tx (looks like Texas, but it
was really Tenn.)
Delilah 12 female Ala
Jasen 7 male
Texas
John 5 male
"
James 3 male
"
Margaret 3 female "
Lois 2 female
"
Bobie 3/12 male
"
Notes: SH] The Tillman family of
Upshur County, Texas, has been mentioned several times in the diary
of Rhoda Totty. Evidently they are friends, or related, to the Spencers
of Upshur County. They made trips from Upshur to Montague together
in order to visit the Totty family. The
Totty/Tillman families were joined by the marriage of Jason A. Tillman
(son of G. B. Tillman) and Mary Elizabeth (Bettie) Totty (dau of F. M.
& Rhoda Totty)..submitted by TOTTY TILLMAN research Shirley Hagemann
who also states: Also living in Upshur County close by was
a: Delilah Tillman 70 born in SC. (Could this be the mother of G.
B. Tillman? Notice his first daughter was named Delilah) She was
living with the Charles Ballard family
Notes: BTM] G[reen] B. TILLMAN was the son of Desire TILLMAN and Delilah GAGE TILLMAN. Desire TILLMAN was born in Mississippi January 17, 1796 and married on December 18, 1817 in Pike County, AL, Delilah GAGE who was born 1800 SC. Desire and Delilah had chilren; Casterren TILLMAN[1818] married Henry W. Harrell; Sarah TILLMSAN [1820]; Green B. TILLMAN married Rhoda Coe September 18, 1846 in Pike County, AL; Simon S. TILLMAN [1830] married Louisana Sanders; Robert TILLMAN [1838], Onie TILLMAN [1844]. Notice the name Onie Ballard below, could this be a child of Desire and Delilah?
Charles Ballard 22 Miss
Onie Ballard 24 Ala
Luncis (?) male child 1 Texas
Notes: SH] I do not know
what the G. B stands for, but we think it is for George. Adeline
(Jason's mother) is listed on Jason's death certificate as Rhoda Coe.
Jason was born 9-22-1852 in Ellis County, Texas but his sister,
Delilah, was
born in Alabama around 1848 so they must have
moved to Texas between '48 & '52. There were no Tillman families listed
in the 1850 Texas census. I can find no records of them in Ellis
County records, but there are other Tillmans there at a later time.
Then they were living in Gilmer (Upshur) by 1860.] Does
anyone know of any Coe family living around the Totty's in Tenn.?
Could there be a connection in Tenn? I have been unable to find any
of the Tillmans in the 1870 census. I don't know where they were.
They were probably still in Upshur, but were likely missed by the census
taker. According to Rhoda's diaries Jason A. Tillman and Mary Elizabeth
(Bettie) Totty Tillman were living in Montague County after their marriage
in 1875, but were living in Upshur County (Gilmer) in 1878 when Robert
Tillman was born (August 17, 1878) and then they were living in Montague
again in the 1880 census. There seemed to have been a lot of moving
back and forth between Montague and Upshur! G. B. Tillman and
family can be found again in Upshur in the 1880 census. There seemed to
have been a lot of moving back and forth between Montague
and Upshur Counties. Shirley Hagemann, Round Rock, Texas

Note: Previous to moving here to Upshur
Co., Texas, Capt. F. M. TOTTY and family lived in Cooke

as listed above, for the children Matilda "Tilda", Frank, Lewis "Pea" and
Lelia"Lillian" TOTTY as they were all born in Texas after
there parents arrived from Hickman
Co., Tennesse in 1853. see also Texas
