The County of Wilkes, North Carolina was created
in 1777 from Surry County and Surry was created from Rowan County in 1770;
Rowan County was created in 1753 from Anson, which was created from Bladen
in 1750; Bladen was created from New Hanover and Bath Counties in 1734.
Bath was discontinued in 1739 and New Hanover was created in 1729 from
Craven County a part of Prec. Bath Co., in 1712 which was formed in 1696.
The County seat is located in Wilkesboro, NC.
1793 September 20th Birth
of Anna Moon11 SPRADLING Wilkes County, North Carolina.
Notes: Anna later married to
Joseph MOORE.
1792 September 12th Marriage
of David SPRADLING and Telitha THOMPSON
Notes: David SPRADLING was born January
27, 1771 in [thought to be South Anna River], Virginia. [Scr: Diary
of Rhoda Spradling TOTTY, his daughter, as transcribed by Birdie (TOTTY)
McNutt], he died Bef. April 07, 1857 in Tottys Bend, Hickman County,
Tennesse when he is mentioned in court records as being dec'd.
Telitha THOMPSON was the daughter of George and Elizabeth THOMPSON[Scr:
Spradling researcher Paul Owen]. She was also born in Virginia.
He married 2nd to the widow Susannah SPENCER 1820-1821 in Warren County,
Tennessee, she is thought by many researchers to be a PARKER by surname.
BTM states Susannah is likely the daughter of Daniel PARKER and Mary Ann
EASLEY, research still in progress, to prove this. She
was born June 26, 1784 [Scr: Diary of Rhoda Spradling TOTTY, his daughter,
as transcribed by Birdie (TOTTY) McNutt] in South Carolina, and died Aft.
1857 in Hickman County, Tennessee.

1795 August 25th Birth of
Rachel SPRADLING, daughter of David and Talitha/Elitha THOMPSON SPRADLING.
Notes: Paul Owen SPRADLING
researcher states My descent is through David's daughter Rachel Spradling
(1796, Wilkes Co., NC - ca 1861, Barry Co., MO). David
had a family in Wilkes Co., NC with Elitha Thompson who he married in Wilkes
Co., NC, Sep 12, 1792. The children were: Anna (ca 1794 - bef 1857),
Rachel ( 1796, Wilkes Co., NC - ca 1861, Barry, Co., MO), Tabitha (1797
- aft 1870, Hickman Co., TN), George Washington (1800 - aft 1870,
Madison
Co., AR), David (ca 1802 - ca 1855, Scott Co., MO), Obediah (1806 -
1839, Hickman Co., TN), Leonard (Jan 26, 1807 - Oct. 28, 1858,
Sebastian
Co., AR), Joseph (1810 - aft 1865, Hickman Co., TN), Elitha committed
suicide in Wilkes Co., NC soon after the last birth and David left for
Warren
Co., TN. David moved between Warren Co. and Lincoln
Co., TN where he met and married Susan Parker. They had a second
family: Jesse (1822 - aft 1857, Monroe Co., AR), Susan (Mar
9, 1822 - Dec 17, 1898, Independence, MO) and Rhoda (Nov 6, 1824
- Apr 9, 1899, Montague Co., TX). The principle
sources for information were: 1) Charles SPRADLING's
will of 7 June 1780 in SC; Agnes Spradling, his daughter, and David
Spradling, his grandson and Agnes' son were bequeathed.
2) Agnes marriage to Aaron Smith, a wounded Rev. War Soldier, in Burke
Co., NC, March 4 1784. 3) Subsequently Aaron Smith was bondsman
for David's marriage to Elitha Thompson. 4) Pension applications for Aaron
and on his death Agnes provided a date for her birth and later marriage
to Aaron. 5) Wilkes Co., NC Court and tax records. 6) Plus a history
of the settlement of Wilkes Co. by the Spradlings. I know little
about Susannah except that in a biographical sketch (Goodspeed) on Rhoda
it was surmised that her maiden name was Parker. The marriage
is established approximately by the break in the birthdays between
the 2 families; i.e. the last son by Elitha was born in 1810. There
was a gap until 1822. Biographical sketches were obtained for
Leonard, Obediah, David and Rhoda.
While these have to be taken with some skepticism
a pattern is clearly shown.
BTM notes that we need to find the above quoted
Goodspeed records, research is still in progress as to the "proven"
history and/or lineage of David SPRADLING father of Rhoda SPRADLING
who married Francis Marion TOTTY in Hickman County, Tennessee, as
noted in the Diaries of Rhoda SPRADLING TOTTY.
