Colorado was first traveled by Eary Spanish exployers who heard of exciting tales of gold and silver from the Indians.   Spain and France alternated controld of the area until 1803, when all but the areas south and west of the Arkansas River were sold to the United States.   In 1806, Zebulon Pike was sent to explore the area.  Later others followed.   The remainder of present Colorado became part of the United States in 1848.  The first town was San Luis established.   Colorado was divided among the territories of Kansas, Nebraska, Utah, and New Mexico.    In 1858 gold was discovered and the Pikes Peak gold rush lured over 50,000 people to Colorado.  Denver, Golden, Boulder, and Pueblo were established as supply bases.   Arapaho County of Kansas Territory was organized by the miners in 1858.   The following year the Territory of Jefferson was created by the residents, which congress failed to recognize.   The Territory of Colorado was organized  in 1861.
