Introduction

California was first discovered in 1542 by Juan
Cabrillo. Sir Francis Drake, of England also visited
here in 1579 and laid claim to the land. But the Spanish were first
to establish settlements. Many American's began traveling overland
to the area around 1841. Early in the Mexican War American
Forces occupied California. An American soldier and exployer John
C. Fremont was the first to head the Republic of California in 1846.
By 1848 California had ceded to the United States after gold was discovered
in Sutter's Mill, causing the Gold Rush of 1849, and bringing thousands
of people from all over the United States and other area's.
California was admitted to the Union in 1850, due to the mass migration
caused by the gold rush.
