The County of Independence was created in1820
from Arkansas the original county and Lawrence which was formed from New
Madrid, MO n 1815. Major indian tribes of the area were the Quapaw,
also known as the Akansa or Arkansas, the Osage, and the Caddo. The
area was origanally opened to American settlers by the Spanish in 1783.
Arkansas Territory was formed from Missori Territory in 1812 with settlers
from Virginia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Mississippi, or Missouri.
The Arkansas Territority included present day Oklahoma until June 15 1836,

1836 Migration of John
G. Wilson family [excerpts are from an article from Independence
Pioneers 1986 Vol 1, The Wilsons of High Rock by Yvonna Wilson Turner.]
The Wilson arrived in Independence County, Ark.
about 1836. Their children making the move included Lucy Ann and
husband, Edward O. TOTTY; Baily G. Wilson and wife Sarah (Simmons); Samuel
W. Wilson; Benjamin F. Wilson; and
John Wilson Jr.. The Wilson's oldest daughter
Elizabeth Rainey "Betsy" Wilson, married Kimbrough T. Ogilvie Jr. in 1829
and moved from Tennessee to Kentucky long before the family migrated to
Arkansas. In 1843 the Ogilvies joined the Wilsons at Highrock and reared
their families there. (note: The Ogilvie's daughter Nancy and James Adolphus
Totty, my G Grandfather, were married in 1847 and divorced in 1848.)
Mason Winstead was from a well-known Tennessee family. Her father, William
Winsted of NC, sent Mason away to France for
her education. Unknown to her, he betrothed her to the son of a plantation
owner's son named Oglesby during her abscence. While delaying his plans
Mason fell in love with John Wilson and they eloped and married Sept, 15,
1808 near Nashville. Mr Winstead cut her from his will and left her only
a horse in his will when he died in 1831. John G. Wilson established
a fine plantation on the Duck River in Bedford County, Tenn and is said
to have built the first cotton gin in the state sometime prior to 1804.
