Introduction
European's were the first to explore the Arkansas area which resulted in establishing the Arkansas Post in 1686 by the French.Major Indian tribes of the area were Akansa or Arkansas, the Osage, and the Caddo. Arkansas was opened to settlement after the the Louisian Purchase, resulting in thousands of settlers coming to Arkansas from the mideast and southeast areas of the United States. The formation of Missouri in 1812 included Arkansas. Arkansas county was formed the following year. Many of the settlers migrated from Virginia and the Carolinas through Tennessee, Mississippi, or Missouri. Arkansas was formed in 1819 when Missouri applied for statehood Present-day Oklahoma was included in Arkansas territory until June 15, 1836, when Arkansas become a state. Arkansas ceded from the Union in 1861 and was readmitted to the Union in 1868.
